Of the First Council of the Seventy. Copyright 1949
This book contains extracts from the sermons delivered at the April and October conferences by the present-day General Authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The material has been gleaned primarily from the conference discourses delivered during the past four or five years. This volume, therefore, contains an up-to-date explanation of Church doctrines, admonitions, and instructions as given by God’s constituted authority to meet the needs of our day. This fact should make the book especially interesting and valuable to members of the Church and also to their friends and others interested in the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Also, a picture of each of the present-day General Authorities is published in this volume, which fact should greatly enhance the value of the book to faithful Church members.
As a forerunner to this volume, each week during the past year the “Deseret News Church Section" has contained a pertinent quotation on the Latter-day Saints, doctrines and beliefs, drawn from the teachings and admonitions of the General Authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ. These quotations were selected for publication by Harold Lundstrom of the Deseret News staff. They were appropriately entitled "GEMS OF 'THOUGHT." The readers of the Deseret News received those doctrinal teachings with enthusiasm, commending them very highly. Since there has been such a whole--hearted response towards this particular portion of the News, it was deemed wise to make these "GEMS OF THOUGHT" available to the public in book form; therefore, Milton R. Hunter was invited to arrange this material for publication, and also to select and add to it sufficient comparable doctrinal teachings, selected from the discourses delivered at the April and October General Conferences of the Church, to compose a book. This assignment has now been completed and the result is this pleasing and worth--while volume.
