It doesn't take a thousand words to create a vivid picture and a lively lesson, especially when the author is the well-known writer Dr. Lindsay R. Curtis. Here commonplace objects and experiences become extra-ordinary messages when combined with the skill of the author and the simple truths of the gospel. The result: Parables for Teaching -succinct stories which are easily visualized and quickly imprinted on the mind.

Take snowshoes, for example. They teach a valuable lesson about friendship. Under the interesting title "The Beacon That Wouldn't Beckon," the author tells of the precise detail that went into the building of a tower and beacon atop Stone Mountain and the devastating effect of leaving out one small detail-a light bulb. This he compares to our performance on earth, our second-mile efforts. Another parable compares the once-popular medical cure-all bloodletting to its modern-day counterpart, blood transfusion, and brings the author's provoking question: What do we give people -spiritual bloodlettings or blood transfusions?

The subjects are many -trees, roots, engines, keys, acoustics, obituaries. Each is drawn into gospel concepts to which all can relate, making this an interesting book to read and a useful one for teaching at home or at church.
