About Product:

The daring trek of nearly 2000 European immigrants in five sepreate handcart companies across the plains of the Midwest and through the Rocky Mountains during the summer of 1856 forms a unique and moving chapter in Amerincan history.  The last two of these companies began their journey from Iowa City late in the season and were caught in violent early winter storms in the middle of the Rockies.  The story of the bold rescue efforts of the Church is the focus of this volume.  Drawing on diaries and journals of participants, the authors find, almost without exception, the handcart pioneerss did not regret having made the journey.  Between vivid descriptions of the incredible harshness of their sufferings are words of praise and gratitude for the rescurers and evidence of rock-solid faith refined through hardship.
