"I had a great affection for Melvin J. Ballard. My association with him was a long and happy one. We were, for twenty years, up to the time of his death, members of the same quorum, and for thirteen years associated in the general superintendency of the Y. M. M. I. A. It was always a delight to be with him to hear him sing, with that wonderful voice, the songs of Zion, and a greater delight, if possible, to hear him preach the gospel of salvation. Brother Ballard's life was an example and an inspiration to young and old alike. I am indeed glad that the story of his life has been put in book form, and that with it are many of his great sermons. To read the story of the life he lived and the sermons that he preached will be a source of edification and inspiration to all who do it, for he was one of the great missionaries of this dispensation, one of the great preachers and teachers of the gospel. All who read this book will be strengthened in their faith and drawn nearer to our Heavenly Father . I commend it to the youth of the Church, and thank my Heavenly Father for the life and service of this man of God."-- GEORGE ALBERT SMITH

Melvin Joseph Ballard was ordained an apostle and became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on January 7, 1919. When President Heber J. Grant had been prayerfully pondering whom to call to serve in the vacant position left by the passing of President Joseph F. Smith, he decided to call on his good friend Richard W. Young. But as he met with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to announce his decision, he found himself saying that the Lord wanted Melvin J. Ballard to serve instead. This wonderful experience teaches us about inspiration and testifies that the Lord truly calls the leaders in the church. Ballard’s life was one filled with service and kindness. He served for several years as president of the Northwestern States Mission of the church as well as being extremely instrumental in paving the way for opening missionary work in South America.
