The two basic messages of teh book are: (1) Christ has always communicated with man either by his personal visits or by appointed messangers; (2) Joseph Smith received visits from every prophet who lived on this earth prior to this dispensation along with many visits from the Savior to teach him the fulness of the gospel.
There is much evidence which proves the existance of the revivals held in the Palmyra area in 1820. The Seer, Jospeh Smith basically is a collection of first-hand accounts of those who knew Joseph Smith and were with him when he was visited or sat at his feet as he told of his experiences. After having compiled the book, it makes much more sense that Joseph Smith was visited literally hiundreds of times by angelic beings rather than the standard twenty or so accounts we generally read about.
