For many people, morality means chastity. It does, of course, and some of these chapters address that topic. But the word has a wider meaning-"conformity to ideals of right human conduct," the dictionary says. Hence the broader approach of this book.
In twenty-five chapters and in a gospel context, fifteen modem Church leaders-Apostles and other General Authorities--speak to moral issues of our day, the "last days" foretold by the scriptures, when wickedness would crescendo throughout the earth. Here these Brethren unite in a voice of both warning and encouragement as they see the "great and spacious building" of Nephi's vision expand in size and influence. They warn us not to partake of the brief, illusory "delights" that building offers; they invite and encourage us to seek the long-term joys that righteous-ness brings.
In contrast to society's accommodation of lowering standards and increasing permissiveness, the authors reaffirm timeless values that the prophets have taught since the time of Adam and Eve. Pointing to some of the greater moral errors of our day, or to routes to them, they discuss topics like chastity, pornography, homosexuality, abortion, drug and other addiction, taking God's name in vain, and the effects of television. The follies and evils of gambling are strikingly demonstrated. Unrighteous dominion is defined and condemned. The means of repentance and a transformation of life are held out for those who have fallen into moral transgression in any form. And positives that bring peace and joy to life as they gradually bring us closer to Jesus Christ are clearly and expressively set out: good home environment, honesty, integrity, clean thoughts, pure lives, and so forth.
But if that big world is so far astray, wouldn't we be better off if we just with-drew from it as much as possible? Not so, we are told here, for while we must not be of the world, we must be in it. How else can we be properly tested? How else can we be a light to the world, as our calling requires?
Two chapters by President Ezra Taft Benson might well be cited as a summary of the book and a goal for the reader. He points to the Word of Wisdom revelation-those who "keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments," are promised great spiritual blessings. That obedience is the key, President Benson emphasizes. He points out also that our model is Jesus Christ-to become like Him is our goal. Clearly, if the counsel in this book is applied it will do much to help the reader toward that goal.
